Peasant Agriculture, Solidarity Economy and Civil Democracy: our objectives and our methods
Because the poorest people are most often peasants who are deprived of basic resources, we work, through our support of peasant agriculture, to restore their roles in the farming culture. Food, both in terms of quality and quantity, revenue creation and a reduction in the rural exodus towards urban centers are many of the direct benefits of our work for poor populations. The challenge for our solidarity economy projects is to put the economy back into the service of man, and not the other way around. Microcredit, cooperatives, aid associations and training— these solidarity activities show us that combating poverty must go hand-in-hand with an economy that works for the common good.
Civil Democracy supports “the voiceless” and gives them the means with which to exercise all of their rights and liberties. Recognized as important economic, social and civil actors, the poorest populations are capable of influencing public policies and stimulating democratic progress.
Over the years, we have seen the incredible potential of even the most destitute to fight poverty and to spread liberty and justice throughout the world.
Partnerships with Local Organizations
All of the projects developed in southern countries by Frères des Hommes are conceived and implemented by the populations themselves, with the participation of local organizations. It is our local partners who identify people’s needs and propose solutions. With them, we develop programs and activities to mobilize all of our energy and knowhow in order to provide them with financial support. Throughout its lifetime, Frères des Hommes has formed many relationships based on a sense of mutual trust. The confidence and commitment shared between populations and Frères des Hommes reinforce our involvement in turbulent countries. Local partner organizations are responsible, along with Frères des Hommes, for the implementation of projects.
A Commitment Shared through Transparency
Frères des Hommes is a group of men and women who come together to bring the means and support for concrete activities that promise to make sustainable changes to the living conditions of poor populations. Frères des Hommes has lasted close to 45 years as a solidarity support network because of its reliance upon one simple principle, transparency: our donors, activists, partners, information regarding our activities, finances and their allocations are all available to you. Frères des Hommes is registered with le Comité de la Charte, the controlling body for public fundraising organizations, and our accounts are certified by an independent accountant. Through our quarterly journal, we keep all of the donors of Frères des Hommes informed about our activities. All of this information, as well as our yearly accounts, are always available on our website www.fdh.org, by telephone or by written request.
