Rwanda in pictures - Natural compost to diversify the food

Other versions of this article : Français
That morning of November, in Nyabimata, South Rwanda, fifty men and women farmers form a circle around the future site of a compost heap. They’ve assembled everything they need to set it up; now they’re ready to learn the procedure. The compost will be used as fertilizer for eggplant, peas or green beans, vegetables which aren’t well-known in Rwanda, and which need fertilizer to grow properly.

Indeed, in the Rwandan countryside, food consists mainly of cassava and sweet potato. To fight against malnutrition, Adenya, with the support of Frères des Hommes, helps farmers in the development of gardening.

This morning, Leonie Uwamaliya (in white T-shirt with purple band on the pictures) teaches the farmers how to make compost in 6 steps: watch the slideshow by clicking on the thumbnails below.

For the set-up of the family agriculture programme in South Rwanda, Frères des Hommes has received financial support from
the Regional council of the Pays de la Loire and the

International Organisation of La Francophonie.
