Rwanda - Adenya, Association for the development of Nyabimata

Adenya is a non-governmental organization created 25 years ago with the objective of contributing to the development of the Nyabimata area, located south-west of Rwanda (currently west zone of Nyaruguru district). It intervenes in a non-urban zone, primarily populated by extremely poor peasants who survive thanks to rudimentary farming undertaken on very small plots (in average, less than 1 hectare [2.5 acres] per family) with very few resources in terms of access to seeds, fertilizers, etc. Moreover, the area becomes less and less arable due to a highly dense population and methods of cultivation : erosion, decreased soil fertility, the new phenomenon of drought, etc. In order to promote and support the necessary economic, social and environmental changes, … Adenya’s action is based on an active approach which invites populations to participate in the improvement of their living conditions. It intervenes mainly in the domains of agriculture, environment, education, and health.

Birth of a Partnership

Frères des Hommes has been participating in Adenya’s projects since the 1980s. After a lull in activities, mainly due to the war and genocide, Adenya rebuilt its mission, and relaunched its activities in 2000. The partnership between Adenya and Frères des Hommes was reborn around the project “Sustainable Agriculture in the South of Rwanda”.

Activities led together

Rwanda - Family agriculture around three hills
