Peru - Knitwear and jewellery to brave the winter

At the beginning of December, a new fair-trade shop will open its doors, for the Christmas and New Year season, in the upscale and tourist area of Miraflores in Lima. The Tarpuy cooperative’s items, mainly knitwear and jewellery, will be on sale (tarpuy means “to sow” in Quechua).
Women from the cooperative have been trained for the past year by the urban development Institute Cenca, partner of Frères des Hommes, mastering weaving techniques, elaborate knitting patterns and the techniques of jewellery. Now, they‘ll learn management skills, in order to run their shop themselves – for the moment they are supported by student volunteers. This cooperative will enable more than 50 women from the poorest neighbourhoods of Lima to improve their own and their families’ finances, thanks to stable incomes.
