A Conference for fisherwomen in a country where to be a woman and fisherman is a daily struggle - this is indeed news! The Conference was held in Hyderabad in the south-eastern province of Sindh, Pakistan, on 31 August, 2008.

More than a thousand fisherwomen, from the civil society or from political organisations from various locations travelled to Hyderabad to participate in the event.

Led by Tahira Ali Shah, vice president of the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF), these women made themselves heard in a profession in which one wouldn’t expect to find them. They spoke in defence of the rights of the fishing community, including access to the resources of the Indus delta. Most of all, they showed that they were able rally alongside with their male colleagues to obtain from the government fairer laws regarding fishing rights and sanctions against sea lords who control the waters and prevent the population from living off fishing.

Freres des Hommes is a partner of PFF.
