The story of Frères des Hommes began in 1965, in India, the day Armand Marquiset discovered Calcutta. Appalled by the poverty he found there, Marquiset created the organization Frères des Hommes and, with volunteers, opened the first Frères des Hommes Center in India. Present all over the world, the organization grew to over 100 volunteers within 5 years.

By the end of the 70s, Frère des Hommes had greatly strengthened its experience. From this maturity, came a new aim: not to work alone, but to join forces on local projects. The assistance of the first years gave way to an approach based on partnership. In 1980, the charter of the organization approved this original approach, which has since been the guiding principle for all organization actions: support programmes initiated in the Global South, and help local populations lay sustainable foundations of an economic development in which they are the principal players.

Since its creation, Frères des Hommes has supported more than 1000 projects in almost 40 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to permanently combat poverty. Its concept of development, its experience and longevity in the field, have made Frère des Hommes a serious and respected voice.
