Some 400 tourists from Southern countries met in October 2008 in Bamako, Mali for the Forum international du tourisme solidaire or FITS (International Forum on Solidarity-based Tourism).

Sandro Saravia represented the Bolivian association Tusoco, a Freres des Hommes partner that organises solidarity tourism activities and projects in the Bolivian high planes. He reports: “The FITS provides an opportunity for creating new contacts, discussing and exchanging views on the beneficial aspects of solidarity tourism and on issues related to organising work.”

Established 5 years ago during the first FITS held in Marseilles, the Tusoco network has acquired a certain expertise in organising solidarity tours. As a special guest speaker, Sandro gave a presentation on community management of tours, describing it as the “most egalitarian type of work for everybody.” On his return, he shared his experiences:“According to a Malian proverb, ‘ travel helps in meeting people, meeting people leads to greater knowledge, which in turn, generates trust and trust brings peace and development to villages.’ In my opinion, solidarity tourism is key to development that respects both man and the environment.”
