The Village of P.R. Puram, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu province, was in a festive mood on November 1st 2008 for the inauguration of CESCI Organics, the new training centre built by the Indian association Ekta Parishad, a partner of Frères des Hommes: inauguration ribbon, plays, awards for the volunteers, tea and sweets were some of the attractions of the day.

The centre, meant for the district’s vulnerable populations, is a place for them to meet and train in organic farming techniques. It was built as part of a programme to support populations hit by the December 2004 tsunami. The tsunami salinised the soil, which had already lost its fertility through massive use of chemical fertilisers during the green revolution. In order to help the region’s peasants find sustainable solutions to the ecological crisis, Ekta Parishad trains the population in organic farming, which is both environmentally friendly and far less costly in terms of basic investments.

Three young Frères des Hommes volunteers will reach the CESCI in December 2009, after an eight-month bicycle tour of Europe and India.
