A march, gathering several thousands of Haitian peasants and their sympathizers, swept into the streets of the Haitian capital, Port au Prince, on 12 December 2008, to demand the promotion of local food production.

[In brief] Haiti -

The march, which was staged by a dozen peasant organizations, among which the Papaya peasant movement, reflected the anger of the population about the government’s attitude. The latter favors biofuel production over food production, which could feed the population. Through that demonstration, the participants that came from the countryside associated the capital’s inhabitants with their struggle, hoping to make peasant farming a top budget priority. Several other marches are due in early 2009.
