[In brief] DR Congo - Women organised against the spread of conflict in Kivu

Other versions of this article : Français
The conflict currently raging in North Kivu has cast thousands of refugees out into the streets, and the violence is destabilizing the entire region. In the neighbouring province of South Kivu, the peace is fragile. L’Association pour la promotion de l’entreprenariat féminin, Apef (Association for the promotion of woman entrepreneurship) is contributing to the maintenance of day to day peace by developing economic opportunities for women.

Indeed, a part of the population depends on the commercial trade between Bukavu in South Kivu and Goma in North Kivu for their nourishment and livelihood: women from Bukavu go to Goma to sell fish and to buy potatoes, beans or corn.

L’Apef accompanies these women so that they can find solutions and supplies elsewhere. Maintaining economic activity is one of the peace guarantees in Southern Kivu, and l’Apef is contributing as much as possible to contain and suppress the problems tied to the conflict in North Kivu. In extremely tense situations such as the one that is currently running through the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the presence of strong, local associations plays a vital role in limiting the spread of unrest in the region.
