Between 9 am and 2 pm and between 4:30 pm and 9 pm every day, the inhabitants of the Central High Plateau of Haiti tune in to Radyo Vya Peyizan, which broadcasts high quality music programmes to people cut off from all other sources of information. The success of this radio channel is undeniable!

The programme most popular among the young is the Sunday programme called “Nouvelles rebondies”, which brings a genuine whiff of democracy to Haiti. Not only are there weekly reviews of regional news, but the participants also comment on the news, provide indepth analyses and invite listeners to participate. The programme deals with subjects that are of special interest to the local population (violence, food, women’s rights, access to land), interviews of those in positions in power (notables, police officers, lawyers, etc) and live questions from listeners. The comperes are popular educators, who always give a social and political tilt to the question-answer sessions. Such interactive exchanges are in fact an important part of the programme as it provides information on rights and the means available to overcome the problems faced by a rural, largely agricultural population. To know one’s rights is the first real step to “déchouké la misé” (“eradicating poverty” in Creole) and in taking one’s future in one’s hand!

We are betting on the continued success of this channel, which keeps growing. It is bound to find an increasingly greater audience and will undoubtedly realize its dream of going national some day.
