Claude Giroud, Director of International Affairs, Confederation Paysanne, declared: “ The MST is a laboratory in action that lays the foundations for an innovative agricultural model in a new society. ”
The first tent was in black tarpaulin and built on the model of a school tent. It hosted events around the theme of access to land, and included a conference on global warming, a discussion on future agricultural models and a debate on agrofuels. The aim was to fight for food sovereignty and environment-friendly agriculture, and against trust land ownership and large food companies that deplete the soil. Frères des Hommes and Peuples Solidaires organised a debate on Janadesh, and the subject of access to land in India, which provided a good opportunity for the discussion of these issues and non-profit initiatives across the world. The second tent housed a portion of the "Terra" exhibition by the Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Salgado.
An AFP (French Press Agency) dispatch, articles in national newspapers (Politis, l’Humanité, La Croix) and radio coverage enhanced the national and international visibility of MST and its partners, and demonstrated the legitimacy of their combat. The public were thus able to (re-)discover their struggle, and become aware of its importance. As Jean-Michel, a visitor, pointed out: " I had the opportunity to meet you at your exhibition at Les Halles…. I congratulate you for your courage, and I fully support you in your fight! ".
