Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

For a long time, the fight for the promotion and respect for human rights was concentrated on civic and political rights : freedom of speech, of religion, of association, etc. However, economic, social and cultural rights have long been the object of social combat – and of progress. They have been legally recognised, notably on an international level with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948, and by the International Pact of 1950 : the right to food, lodgings, health, education, social protection, decent work... These fundamental rights are still widely flouted, even in countries where political and civic rights are relatively well established. This shows that rights are inextricably linked and that they should thus be respected and promoted concomitantly, in order to effectively protect all human beings, who can thus fully achieve freedom and equality, individually and as members of society. Frères des Hommes and its partners support populations in their actions and demands for the respect of their rights. To this end, they perform different actions: training in human rights, reinforcement of organizations in defense of rights, such as syndicates; campaigns and demonstrations; pleas to the authorities, etc.
