On a big sign in front of the castle in Pau, passers-by can read, “Can we consume less? How?”. We are right in the heart of “Hestiv’Oc”, the Occitan music and culture festival, in August 2009. Twenty young people, from 18 to 30 years old and from six European countries(1), joined up in Paris last April, brought together by Frères des Hommes for the first session of "Hemispheres".
After three weeks of training, these youths emerged with a certain maturity, as noted by Josephine Infray, intern for the Frères des Hommes training team. Dianto Bachriadi tells us how he became a militant for the right to land: his childhood in Jakarta, student demonstrations under Suharto, his first elections, the Rolling Stones and the novel that opened his eyes.
Dianto, what brought you to undertake your current fight?
I was born in a small village en the island of Sumatra. When I was a year old, my parents moved to Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, where I grew up. I’m a big city boy! (laughs)

The subject of discussion during the first session of "Hemispheres" that brought together youth workers was agricultural issues. The choice of theme was not without utility, given that 70% of those suffering from hunger in the world are peasants.
This theme is also of current topical interest in Europe: the restructuring of agricultural policies forms the core of debates with the European Commission which wants agro fuels to provide at least 10% of the energy used for transport by 2020. (...)
Three weeks of training to observe the realities of the south, question the methods of mobilization, understand the interdependencies between hemispheres, then ACT! For this is the main objective of this training scheme : these young people will return to their countries and set up events and activities to raise public awareness of international solidarity and the fight against poverty.

Dianto Bachriadi from the Indonesian association Pergerakan, and Ndiakhate Fall from the Senegalese Association UGPM, brought their vision of food sovereignty to young participants and described the means by which communities can defend their rights to food.
